Welcome to Osprey class! 2025 - 26
Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn term! This is a busy few weeks, made all the more exciting by Christmas at the end of it!
Please be aware that the following expectations are still in place:
Reading 3 times per week (and signed!)
TT Rockstars (9 sessions - the cut-off is a Thursday morning at 8:00am so anything added after this will not count.)
Project homework - The deadline for this half-term is December 8th. Please come and speak to one of the adults in the Osprey team if your child needs any support at home with this, or any resources. There is also the option of homework club if spaces are still available.
A letter has gone home for the parents of Year 6 children which details the information for the online learning platforms (maths and SPAG). Please note that at this stage, the work on there is not compulsory but will be replacing the expectation for project homework after the Christmas break (Spring term.)
Planner - Autumn Term 2 overview
Homework - Autumn 2 homework - Our place in the world
Maths - We will continue to practice arithmetic skills on a weekly basis. This takes the form of an end of week test but also 'rapid arithmetic' sets during the week. This half-term will focus on fractions, which is a large and significant unit, and we will look at equivalent fractions, simplifying, adding and subtracting fractions and then multiplying and dividing. Children will also see how fractions link to ratio and how their times table knowledge is crucial for helping to understand how to change and manipulate fractions.
English - We will be looking at persuasion in our writing for this half-term, more specifically, persuasive brochures/guidebooks. This will link directly to our new text: Hole by Louis Sachar. After this is another short unit on 'writing to discuss' which asks an important question about crime and poverty which requires a balanced argument approach. For this question, we will be using extracts from 'Oliver Twist' by Charles Dickens. Our reading comprehension will be a variety of texts and extracts including Holes and A Christmas carol. Weekly SPAG checks will continue and our 'small steps' will be covered throughout each writing session to ensure consolidation and coverage. Spelling will be taught at least twice a week and include different activities that focus on patterns, phonic recall and statutory spelling words.
Science - Year 6 will be focusing on 'Light' for this half-term and this will include looking at reflection, refraction, shadows and different light sources. Year 5 will be looking at forces with Mr Jesshop.
Geography - Our humanities focus has switched to geography skills and Osprey will be exploring 'Our place in the world.' This will include local, national and global links and the children will be thinking about how geography affects choices and responsibilities as global citizens.
DT - This is another exciting textiles unit that relates to Christmas - stockings! The focus will be on design, lining and stitching and we will evaluate our sewing skills at the end of the unit.
RE - This half-term we will study, 'God and Incarnation' We will explore alternative accounts of incarnation and try to understand why Christians can have different interpretations of the same idea. Hopefully, we can also welcome a local visitor into our class to talk about Christianity as well.
PSHE - The unit for this half-term is 'Health and Wellbeing.' We will consider the following concepts: Relaxation, the importance of rest, embracing failure, going for goals, taking responsibility for our feelings, healthy meals and sun safety.

Homework - Autumn 1 homework - Ancient Greece
Maths We begin by revising place value for both year groups and will be practising arithmetic skills on a weekly basis and times tables daily/regularly to build confidence and knowledge in these areas. We will move on to using formal methods within the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Please note that the curriculum for years 5 and 6 are similar in content and there will be crossover during lessons. However, all the year group-specific content will continue to be taught as well.
English Our focus for the first part of this half-term is non-chronological report writing, which links to the KS2 theme of Ancient Greece. After this, we will be writing our own narrative based on the brilliant book by RIck Riordan: 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning thief.' Our SPAG will be revision and use of particular grammar features such as word classes, parts of a sentence, different sentence types, phrases and clauses, adverbs, paragraphing, parenthesis and ellipses. Our spelling lessons will be three times a week and handwriting will be one or two sessions. Sometimes there will be a mix of both as well as incorporating dictation. Our whole class reading lessons will be three times weekly and there will be a variety of different text types used in order to cover all the reading skills and objectives.
Science This half-term the topic for both year groups will be 'Living things and their habitats.' Year five will be learning about life cycles (plants and animals) and the reproduction of plants. and Year six will be looking at classification systems, grouping animals and plants, and learning about the work of Carl Linnaeus.
Humanities Ancient Greece is the history theme that we start the Autumn term with. It will be looking at when and where this period of time was, similarities between Athens and Sparta, some Ancient Greek myths (linked to English) Greek Gods, the Olympic games, Alexander the Great, the education system, democracy and comparing these between then and today. We will look at artefacts from that time and use enquiry skills to form theories and opinions about different aspects of Ancient Greek life.
Art We will be looking closely at Ancient Greek pottery, the designs, patterns and colours used, and will be using our sculpture skills to make our own pots. We will use a variety of clay techniques to do this.
PSHE The first unit covered is 'family and relationships' and this includes discussion and reflection on respect, friendship skills, resolving conflict, family life, stereotyping and changes and loss.
OsPREY CLASS 2024 - 2025
Welcome back to our newly formed Osprey class of 2024-25! We have an exciting year planned and I know the children are going to work hard to try and achieve their very best and continue to use the core values in their everyday school life. Please contact me in the first instance if you have any questions or concerns and I will be very happy to talk to you.
Please find below, an overview of some of the routines and procedures for Osprey class.
Weekly homework: Reading at least three times per week please and reading records are due in on a Thursday. The responsibility for bringing the record in is on the child as they are in Year 5 or 6. Signing this ensures your child or children receive part of their Golden Time.
TT Rockstars – The expectation is either to complete 3 x 3 minute sessions or 9 x 1 minute sessions over the course of the week. This will also be checked on a Thursday. Please encourage your child to take part in this as it is vital that times tables are practised regularly.
Please note that Year 6 homework will change in the run up to SATs and there will be a requirement for children to carry out revision activities that will be detailed each week on Parentmail. We will notify you of this nearer the time.
Summer 2 - Planner Planner
Summer 2 -Homework Map skills homework - Summer 2 2025
Maths All of Osprey class will be taking part in a 'real life' context maths project that uses the resources from White Rose Maths, the scheme that currently supports our curriculum teaching. It is bakery/cooking themed and will involve the children using the numeracy skills that they have learned across this year as well as in previous year groups. It will cover a wide range of topics including ratio, percentages, converting units, time, fractions and use of the four operations and place value.
English We will continue to read 'The House with Chicken Legs' as our main class text and use a variety of different texts for our reading comprehension work. Our writing, however, will be several shorter pieces that will be produced weekly and will start with two narrative pieces and then move on to two formal pieces. After this, we will be looking at the wonderful work of Nicola Davies and one of her picture books, 'The Promise.' Again, this will be narrative based.
Geography We will become 'Marvellous mappers' this half-term and carry out some local fieldwork. We will use compasses, sketch maps and collect data. We will learn about Ordnance Survey maps and the associated symbols as well as understand how OS grid references work.
DT Our focus is on electronics this half-term and how motors and different switches work within complex circuits. Switch types will include contact, rotational, resistance and computer controlled. This links to previous science teaching (electricity) for both year groups. We will be designing our own 'anti-intruder' device which must include a range of components and then building these using equipment provided but also our own creativity!
RE This term we turn our attention to Islam and 'Submission to the will of Allah.' We will look at how Muslims have two core beliefs: there is one God and that Muhammad is the main messenger. We will also revise the importance of the Quar'an and look at how Salah (praying) is a way to show submission by Muslims.
PSHE This will take the form of 'Safety and the changing body' and some lessons will be separate for Year five and six. We start by looking at digital consumerism, social media portrayal then move on to some basic first aid skills before finishing with targeted RSE units.
Summer 1 - Planner Planner Sum1
Summer 1 - Homework Glastonbury and the Levels homework
Maths We will be learning and revising work on statistics; co-ordinates, four quadrants, symmetry and reflection. We then move to shape, starting with measuring and calculating angles before continuing with angles in a triangle and then polygons (regular and irregular.) Alongside this, we will be practising arithmetic skills on a daily basis.
English Somerset myths and legends is our focus for the first half of this term and we will be reading and exploring lots of folk tales that are associated with the places in our locality. This links to our History topic of Glastonbury and the Levels. We will visit Glastonbury Tor and this will form part of our writing - planning and writing an opening scene for our own folk tale. It will have two possible outcomes, which could then lead to a 'choose your own adventure' story. Children will have a choice about whether they would like to continue this in their own time.
History This half-term will be centred around our local area and more specifically, Glastonbury and the Levels. This is always a popular topic and one that evokes interest and curiosity. We start off by looking at the flooding history of the levels and incorporating some geography to give it some context. We then learn about the Abbey and the Tor and both significances to Glastonian history. We will also look at the impact of the annual Glastonbury festival and its influence over the local area. Finally, we will visit the town and look at the places which link to King Arthur, which is one legend that we will tell during our English lessons.
Science Year 5 will continue to work on 'changing materials and properties' and Year 6 will further explore inheritance and evolution. Please note that some sessions for Year 6 will be for revision purposes.
PSHE We will visit the last of our 'economic wellbeing' lessons, which focusses on careers. Then we move to citizenship and look at the following titles: pressure groups, valuing diversity, food choices and the environment, caring for others.
Art This unit will also tie in with the History theme for this term and will involve a Glastonbury Tor mixed media project. We will use techniques and ideas from previous units this year as well as develop skills in using pastels and charcoal. Our visit to Glastonbury will enable us to sketch ideas and take photographs of particular structures, landscapes and environmental images that inspire us.
PSHE The first unit covered is 'family and relationships' and this includes discussion and reflection on respect, friendship skills, resolving conflict, family life, stereotyping and changes and loss.
Spring 2 - Planner Planner
Spring 2 - Homework (Year 5 and optional Year 6) Homework

This, along with TT Rockstars is helping the children hugely. Please encourage them to keep practising at home. We will be finishing our decimals unit, then moving on to look at fractions, decimals and percentages and the relationship between them. After this, we will cover: converting units, area and perimeter and Year 6 will look briefly at algebra and ratio, which we will follow up with again after SATs in May.
English Our new English unit links to Geography this term and is all about the Arctic and the Antarctic - we are exploring Shakleton's journey through the story of 'Ice Trap!' (a retell of the famous expedition.) We will use this, as well as the themes within the geography link, to write persuasively and use this way of writing to create an advert, travel guide and letter. Our SPAG will be revision of previous learning and specific skills that are needed for writing to persuade. Spelling, handwriting and dictation will also continue and will be combined to cover the required knowledge and practice.
Science The unit for Year 5 will be 'Materials and their properties,' while Year 6 will be finishing the electricity unit and moving on to evolution and inheritance.
Geography In this humanities topic, we will be travelling from pole to pole and discovering 'A Frozen World.' The children will be thinking about the Arctic and Antarctic as places that are actually very different from one another: the location, climate, wildlife and environment overall.
Art This unit will use drawing and painting to create frozen landscapes, inspired by our geography theme. We will be creating our own projects through building up our samples and pieces along the journey and expressing ourselves as artists. We will look at the work of American artist, Georgia O'Keefe to think about our own individual style and how we can convey emotion and abstract ideas through our work.
Music 'You've got a friend' will be the song that we are going to learn this half-term. It is sung by Carol King and we will sing, play and perform with our voices and instruments. We will also use the song to help us with our improvisation and composing skills.
